Vectors

42 months and counting

It started in earnest at the end of the summer, 2020. Since then it has been thought experiments, design experiments, wide research, rabbit holes and building. Lots of building.

I have all my notes. I left breadcrumbs everywhere for myself. Books that I bought for future me to read. Whiteboards captured and waiting for some probable day in the future. In what may be a throw back to my Dungeons & Dragon days, I have maps. Lots of maps. And as I have always done, when I get the time to write something down, I share it.

2022

In 2021 I posted my first set of vectors in an industry “look forward.” It was a memo I had originally distributed to clients and a few industry insiders. A summary of things that, as I looked at the future, were core elements. They were straightforward and a mix of vectors and structure. This list represented to me how players operating in L&D today could re-align. It was clear to me that the industry, as it is currently organized, wouldn’t survive. I was trying to be helpful. It can be found here.

2023

Coming off Hurricane Ida it was time to add some more color to this world I was building. Also this thought experiment was taking me all over the place. In addition to looking at learning I was looking at value builders (learners) and value aggregators (companies.) What did they look like and what did they need? All the while I kept reverse engineering, building models and testing ideas. I had spent a lot of time in my head and it was time again to share. I shared the industry report on this blog but included two other pieces on my venture blog. The full set is here.

2024

In addition doing a quick check on the prior year’s vectors (yep, still good) I released the latest additions to my industry of the future. This focused on a new character, the mechanics that build learning. With AI calling the question on everyone’s job, I had to go meta. What skills will those that help others build skills need? And how will they do their work. Answers can be found here.

Now back to building

After every note I turn my attention to experiments. What would a product look like? Can I build a business model for that product? Does the technology exist today? The first year I mapped out three concepts. Product descriptions, business model, organization structure were drafted and tested. Last year I focused on video and solving the “training videos suck” problem. Could you create a valid learning design that would drive performance AND people would want to watch? Yes you can. And it is profitable, scalable and enjoyable when you know how.

Eternally grateful for the sounding boards, sage advisors, crazy dreamers, industry experts, authors (dead and alive), friends and fellow nerds of all kinds. This is fun.
